Resident Leaders Fellowship Program

Position Description

The White Center Community Development Association (White Center CDA) is

offering Fellowships to resident leaders. These part-time Fellowship positions will

help resident leaders develop skills and capacities to be community change agents in

the White Center/Boulevard Park community.

Purpose of the Fellowship Program: The Fellowship program is envisioned as a

way for White Center residents to get started in community work, develop professional skills and

influence the work of the White Center CDA and its 3 departments: Family Development,

Community Building and Neighborhood Revitalization. Each Fellow will have individual

responsibilities but will also work in a cohort to support cross-training, holistic program

interventions and team building. Each Fellow will be supervised by a department representative

to provide training, guidance and direction.

Scope of Work: 4 Fellows will be hired in the inaugural year 2009.

1) Family Development: Focuses on early learning, school success and family economic

success.

Possible work may include:

Health fairs created to provide information/services to families of children attending the 3

target elementary schools: White Center Heights, Beverly Park and Mount View;

Connect medical/dental homes (health insurance) for all children attending the 3 target

schools;

Family, Friends and Neighbor program support to connect with family, friends and

neighbors who are daycare providers for children of working parents;

Work with King County Food & Fitness Initiative to bring food and fitness opportunities

to White Center/Boulevard Park;

Work to connect residents to opportunities in the Green Movement (part of the Got Green

jobs initiative). This can include connecting people to training opportunities, green events

and volunteer activities, and potential employment;

Update/Maintain the White Center Directory/Resource Guide;

Work with College Success Foundation to connect middle school students to scholarship

opportunities;

Others.

2) Community Building: Focuses on resident leadership, community engagement and

mobilization.

Possible work may include:

Support the organizing of the Annual Community Summit event;

Connecting People & Place to Build Community

Organize and build the White Center CDA Membership through education and

mobilization, which includes online efforts;

Support the Family Connections social networking events for a cohort of families from

the 3 target schools;

Partner with other targeted groups: youth, seniors, Greenbridge Community Council, the

Green Movement, etc.;

Work with various stakeholders around Hicks Lake/Lakewood Park to prioritize a park

project. Fellow will work closely with residents and community groups to help residents

decide which project to install in the park (a water fountain or walking trail);

Work with the White Center annexation initiative-education and voter registration;

Others.

3) Neighborhood Revitalization: Focuses on affordable housing development, the

neighborhood business district, public safety and open space.

Possible work may include:

Support December Community Summit event particularly for Strength of Place Initiative

(affordable housing projects) and equitable development;

Business survey work and outreach including development of business contact database,

conducting business surveys, and inputting and managing data collection;

Convene a focus group support of customer shopping surveys and marketing/branding

research for the business district;

Public safety volunteer projects related to decreasing graffiti, trash/blight, and event

planning for National Night Out in early August;

Conduct community outreach for Strength of Place Village Project (30 units of affordable

rental housing);

Others.

Applicants must possess the minimum qualifications and interest described below.

Duties and Expectations:

o Attending mandatory workshops for skill building and leadership training pertaining to

the specific hiring request.

o Resident recruitment to the work as required by the specific hiring request.

o Recruitment of critical partners to the work and results.

o Co-planning, developing and implementing and ensuring the progress of the work of the

hiring request.

o Outreach at various events and functions to raise the status and awareness of the results

and opportunities of the hiring request.

o Provide periodic reporting to the White Center CDA pertaining to the hiring request.

o Collaboration/communication with others for the purpose of sharing resources and

information.

o Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications: To perform this role successfully, these individuals must be able to

perform each duty and expectation. The requirements listed below are representative of the

knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

o Ability to communicate the White Center CDA mission, vision and values.

o Excellent management and interpersonal skills, including good personal organizational

skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and time manage.

o Responsible and able to follow instructions and multi-task.

o Comfort with community organizing, outreach and meeting new people.

o Good communication skills including experience and comfort with oral, written,

listening, facilitating and public speaking opportunities. Proficient written and verbal

communication skills in English.

o Bilingual in English and either Spanish, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Somali, Cantonese,

Samoan, Amharic, Tigrinia, Tagalog, or other language spoken by residents of WC/BP.

o Basic computer skills including word processing, database and presentation software.

o Strong ability to work with others, develop resources and build alliances.

o Proven ability to work with extremely diverse populations, including age, language and

ethnic diversity.

o Strong connection to community.

o Must have access to transportation.

o Highly preferable: White Center/Boulevard Park residents living in area codes

(98168, 98106, 98146)

Hours and Compensation:

Fellows must have the ability to attend flexible day/evening meetings as required by their

respective department. Fellows are part time employees White Center CDA with no health

benefits. Fellows will be compensated at an hourly rate of $15/hour (up to $5,625 per position, a

maximum of 375 hours) for August through December 2009. Future work is negotiable based on

performance and budget.
